Goodbye Pluto. We will miss you!
Today in 2006 Pluto was declassified as a planet. But why?
Well honestly because it's a dwarf planet. It actually orbits in a disc like zone beyond the orbit of Neptune. The 3 criteria for all the full-sized planets are
- It is in orbit around the Sun.
- It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape).
- It has "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit.
Pluto only hits the first 2 of these criteria. Bummer Pluto. You were one of my favorit planets because I grew up on Disney and Mickey's Dog's name was Pluto as well.
